The Team behind the Titans!

<no colour space>

The Club is proud to be run entirely by volunteers, almost all of whom are supporting their own youngsters within the Membership, or who have had long-standing affiliation to youth cycling development in Perthshire.

<no colour space>

At its core is a richly experienced pool of Coaches with a minimum of Level 2 Certificate in Cycle Coaching (L2CCC) supported by a keen array of Leaders with a minimum of Mountain Bike Leadership Award Level 2 (MBL) or its predecessor, Trail Cycle Leader (TCL). In addition, we have a dedicated Committee to fulfil the Club’s administrative and organisational functions. An ongoing PVG status audit of new and existing staff affirms our commitment to Child Protection and we have a dedicated Child Welfare Officer and Member Peer representatives in place to support our youngsters. We also welcome the huge contribution of Parents, Carers and indeed some former Members who come along to join in the fun and  help out on a weekly basis…

These, then, are the guys (and girls!) who make it all happen:

COACHES

12705210_1238681352813467_192082103539404075_nScot Tares (Head Coach)L2CCC (with MTB, Track, Road & TT Discipline Specific Units or “DSUs”), TCL, GoMTB Level 5, Bikeability CT Plus, SICI Professional Bike Fitter, Outdoor First Aid

Scot has coached at Tay Titans since the Club’s inception in 2009 and has been largely responsible for shaping its progress over the years.

He owns and runs Skinny Tyres, organising competitions, training programs, cycle tours and guiding throughout the year. When he’s not on the winding roads of Corsica or Le Tour stages of the Alps, he’s heavily involved with school coaching and development, having been North of Scotland Team Coach at the School Games in Sheffield 2011, and North of Scotland Team Manager at the Inter-regional MTB Champs 2012, Hadleigh Farm Essex, where they were Gold Medal winners.
No stranger to cycle competition on his own two wheels, Scot has raced Track, Grass Track, Road, Time Trial and Cyclocross, and is equally happy to get his mountain bike dirty at the Strathpuffer 24 and beyond.

Kevin Blundell (Assistant-Head Coach)L2CCC, TCL

When asked about info for his bio, Kev came up with the Cycling Proficiency Badge of his school days as a “career highlight”. While we all know that was quite a (long) while ago, we’re also well aware for Kev’s massive enthusiasm for all things cycling, and when he’s not out shredding on his Enduro rig, he’s a key member of the Luncarty Cycle Rabble.

Kev’s levels of organisation and planning and teamwork (especially in supporting and mentoring new coaching staff) are a constant marvel to the rest of the gang here at Titan Towers, and if it’s happening for the Tay Titans, you can pretty much guarantee Kev’s been in the thick of it.

Our resident “Super-Veteran”, while Alan has admitted he’s glad he doesn’t have to pound out so many laps on the XC race-circuit, he’s still quite happy to show the more “enthusiastic” Members a clean pair of heels when it comes to the steep stuff. It was once remarked that Alan could find a hill on a tennis court when it came to hitting the trails, but a long succession of young riders (and successful racers) have greatly benefitted from his enthusiasm and experience over his last 6 years or so at Titans, and with Alan at the head of a ride train, you know you’re in for a good blast.

Outside Titans, Alan races for the Perth City Cycles shop team. He is a regular feature on the podia of the Scottish Cross Country Association series races in the lighter months, switching to his (pink?!?) cyclocross bike in the winter in the Scottish Cyclocross series. He’s also ridden road sportives and Enduro (but only once…) and is a fully trained cycle mechanic.

Ian HoldenL2CCC (with MTB DSU), TCL, MBL, GoMTB Level 5, Outdoor First Aid10628141_862972370402884_2743017672822790849_n

Ian reckons he’s been biking for far too long to admit to… which probably means around the time that front suspension was considered “excessive”. He’s raced in most disciplines on an MTB, from local DH events in the 80s, to SXC and Fair City Enduro in more recent times, to a very impressive Top 30 Male Solo finish in the infamous Strathpuffer 24 of 2016. One of the founders of “Thursday Night Bikers” on Facebook, Ian will usually be found up Kinnoull Hill on a Thursday evening, and his knowledge of the local trails is (probably) equalled only by long-time compatriot, John McLagan. They, like Alan, race in the colours of Perth City Cycles.

No stranger to speed off the bike, Ian is a former Formula 2 waterski racer, and remains an active member of the Perth Waterski Club, to whom the Titans are very grateful for periodic use of their premises for meetings and events

Like Ian, John is a Perth Local who’s left an impressive amount of mountain bike tyre rubber on the local trails over the years, and most of the local STRAVA segments have a certain Mr McLagan in or around the KOM slot. Similarly, he’s been scoring some excellent results in Fair City Enduro and the Scottish Cyclocross series of late… when he’s not off shredding the trails of the Alps!!!

Kris WipatL2CCC (with MTB DSU), MBL, GoMTB Level 5, Outdoor First Aidkw

Kris got his L2CCC in 2015 having been a parent helper with Titans for quite some time before that. Somehow he still finds the time to coach, despite being a full-time GP, but we hope we never need the full extent of his medical accumen which includes pre-hospital and advanced trauma care… including in a battlefield setting (in case any one gets shot on a Club night!). Kris is also a keen hillwalker and a former team doctor to the Tayside Mountain Rescue Team.

SimonSimon AugerL2CCC, TCL

Simon joined the Titans coaching staff in 2016, having previously coached the junior ranks of Bedgebury Forest Cycle Club in Kent. Now working as a full-time cycle technician (in a well known local bike shop beginning with H…) he’s also an AEL with one of the local Scout groups, with a longstanding involvement in the Scouting Movement throughout the UK. Fortunately the day-job doesn’t put him off cycling too much, and he still has enough enthusiam to hit the trails in his spare time. Whilst his ability and experience are perfectly evident, Simon says he’s quite convinced he’s not really as good a rider as he is in his own mind… but then that probably applies to most of us!!!

Elizabeth Gilmour – L2CCC13015350_10154130007447938_6965556874882644841_n

Another MTB racer, Liz also joined the Titans coaching staff in 2016, bringing 15 years experience of XC and Marathon/Stage racing up to and including National and elite levels (latterly with the Bike Soup Magazine team). She, along with Kelly Fry are the Titans first female coaches, and they along with MBL Caroline Buchanan head up the club’s girls cycling development programme.

While new to the Titans in 2016, Kelly is no stranger to cycle coaching, having spent 7 over years with Sustrans as as Cycle Ride Leader (CRL) Trainer and mentor, CRL for Active School neighbourhoods, and also as manager for their I Bike project.

LEADERS

<no colour space>

Neil Mackinnon  – TCL, GoMTB Level 5, Bikeability Level 2, Outdoor First Aid
An active member of the Titans Committee, and the one we usually turn to for our IT backup,  Neil is also a Cub Scout Leader.

Martin TaylorTCL

Another Scout Leader – racking up 28 years of sercive in 2016 – Martin also brings another huge swathe of First Aid experience from his role as Emergency Medical Technician with the British Association of Ski Patrollers, based in Glenshee<no colour space><no colour space>
<no colour space>

<no colour space>

Wattie GarlandTCL
YET another Scout Leader!!! Wattie escaped from the Kingdom of Fife to join the Titans as a TCL in 2013 and became Club Treasurer for 2016. He’s a fully qualified First Aid Trainer and Assessor. Happy on the road bike as much as his 29er, he completed a Lands End to John O’Groats run in 2014 and managed to cure his saddle sores in time for 2015’s Etape Caledonia as well as Fair City Enduro.

Ross Clark MBL (in progress), Outdoor First Aid

Ross has been supporting the Titans for more than enough years that we badgered him into getting his MBL. He’s also an active member of the club committee.

<no colour space>

<no colour space>

Caroline BuchananMBL, Outdoor First Aid

Like Ross, Caroline hung around for too long when we looking for MBLs (and we still are!!!). Thankfully she rose to the challenge and became our first female MBL in 2016, despite only having been riding her mountain bike for about a year at the time! Outside Titans, she’s formerly an assistant coach in gymnastics and has been heavily involved in youth club work. The gymnastics probably explain her enthusiasm for getting her bike wheels off the ground and she was a fitting Club representative at the 2016 “Air Maiden” event at Glentress… that name’s going to stick…

Paul HigginsTCL, Outdoor First Aid

Paul’s been a keen cyclist from his youth but really started getting into mountain biking with son Liam (now of Progression Bikes racing team) about 4 years ago. Both have been involved with motocross for several years, which probably explains their DH tendencies. Off the bike, Paul is a keen angler of 35 years experience and a former Scotland Fly Fishing team member.
